The language I had the most difficult time learning was French. When a few years later I began studying Spanish, it seemed to be that the process of learning a foreign language was much easier. I considered that perhaps with French I was actually learning two things: the French language and the process of learning a foreign language. Computer languages have been similar. When I began with Perl, I had to learn not just Perl, but also the concept of an array, for example. PHP is the fourth programming language I've learned, and it was a delight to see how quickly it came together. A language teacher at my high school was reputed to speak upwards of twenty languages. Perhaps at a certain point it is all vocabulary.
